After finding demonic and dark drawings from a fellow Gilbert, Jeremy begins drawing again for the first time since his parents died. He takes this dark direction for his inspiration as well. Jeremy tries being a bit nicer to Tyler when he finds out that he might be dealing with stuff at home that makes him carry so much anger. Meanwhile, Stefan and Damon find they have some leftover business in town just when they were about to leave for good. There’s another vampire in town and the sheriffs found a body he left behind. It doesn’t take long for Damon to figure out it’s Logan, who the Salvatore brothers thought to be dead. Logan attacks Damon and demands answers, craving to be a day walker like Damon and Stefan are. He doesn’t bother keeping a low profile, trying to get attention from Elena’s aunt, Jenna. Elena and Stefan finally get together, but just in time for Elena to find out the secret of why Stefan was attracted to her in the first place.
I am glad that they had Stefan resisting Elena as she went after him, while still sustaining a bit more self-respect on Elena’s part than she really had in the book. Since that resistance and chase was part of how they got together it’s good to see them incorporating it in to their relationship. However, it has been so back and forth, off and on, love and fear, between Elena and Stefan. Other things aside from their love life are going to be complicated enough that they don’t need to have this constant back and forth with their relationship in every episode so hopefully it finds its grounding soon.
Elena gets in an “accident” towards the end of the episode, but it looks like someone might be trying to kill her. There was a very similar accident towards the end of the second book. It looked like a different person so I’m not sure if this was just a coincidence, but if it wasn’t then things could get interesting and headed for some of the bigger events of the original source material. If it is going in this direction though then Damon needs to start getting much more aggressive with his objective toward Elena. Apparently, he hasn’t given up on his elaborate plan to bring Katherine back and all of the vampires with her, to get his revenge on them all.
Damon wasn’t nearly as funny, sarcastic, or lively in this episode. He just didn’t seem to embody his proud, powerful, cocky personality like he has in every other episode. There was some potentially good foreshadowing with Tyler. I won’t say any more, but I’m assuming this was intentional unless they completely changed his character. It is most likely pretty far off in the future though. I’m also still very suspicious of Alaric. I’m not sure what the angle they’re playing with him is, but I’m very curious to see what role he plays, especially when his true identity is known.
The side stories with Jeremy work well enough, but unless this is getting closer to him uncovering memories of Vicki or finding out the truth of the undead’s presence around him than his stories still shouldn’t be taking up the main plot. The same goes for the Caroline and Matt storyline. Their friendship/romance is amusing, but when fundamental elements with Damon and Stefan are missing it hardly seems fitting. Not to mention, Bonnie wasn’t even in this episode. Caroline mentions that she was supposed to get a ride with her at one point, but that is about all the mention she gets in the episode. The Turning Point isn’t one of the better episodes of the Vampire Diaries. There is some excitement, foreshadowing, and new surprising turns and developments. Still, I hope the writers keep the emphasis on the vampire brothers, Elena being stuck between them, and head towards some of the exciting future catastrophes ahead of them.
